We look forward to seeing you light up the Lagoon

Relays – yes, we can allow but would need to charge similar to individual cost per person. (Most of our costs are incurred in the number of boats transferring swimmers to the start)
Registration is online  www.bigbayevents.co.za scroll down towards the bottom of the home page where you will find links to UPCOMING SWIMS, follow the link for MAD DASH
7km & 12km both start at 4:30am
There is a strong tidal current assisting swimmers, which will get stronger throughout the swim.
It is compulsory for swimmers to have a swim float with a torch inserted into the drybag section.
We provide support boats to guide and monitor the swimmers during the swim.
Temperatures are subject to wind and prevailing weather conditions at the time of the swim and could be between 16° & 18°
We will carry nutrition on the boats for swimmers and all other food will be for their account.
Langebaan has an extensive amount of accommodation and swimmers could use any of the regular booking sites.

Who we do this for? The Guild Cottage is an organization that provides a safe haven for girl survivors of sexual abuse, representing all demographics in South Africa. Sexual abuse is a pervasive issue in South Africa, affecting individuals from all cultural, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds. The girls are removed from their abusive circumstances and referred to Guild Cottage by the courts, where a team of experts provide appropriate therapy and support to help them heal.

By donating any amount, no matter how small, you can make a significant difference in the lives of these girls. Please visit their website, http://guildcottage.org/, to learn more about the organization and to donate. Your contribution can help provide a better future for these survivors of sexual abuse.

Swim Plans and Logistics

2 weeks to go – are you ready for the dash?

The Swim:

PLEASE NOTE: The swim routes will be finalized taking the expected weather into account and we have introduced an interesting swim start variance to test your mental and swimming strengths. (We also love surprizes…don’t you??)We will refer to Long & Medium to avoid confusion.

Both swim distances finish at Friday Island and are mostly on the same route to maximise your safety. It is however critical to stick with your registered distance as there will be separate starts.

The object is to make use of the lagoon tidal flow to greatly assist your swim speed, so our timing is critical. The swim date of 1st February was planned around new moon which offers the strongest tidal flow and the darkest night sky.

The start time of 4:30am is challenging but exciting as we expect first light around 6:00am and sunrise at 6:30am. The ambient temp should be moderate and water temp may be anywhere between 16 and 20 degrees. Think carefully when packing.

Swim breakdown:

All swimmers meet at the Langebaan Yacht Club.
Preekstoel to Friday Island – Very strong tidal flow for 7km of the swim. Expect to swim at least 20% faster than your standard time. Friday Island is the exit point for all swimmers.

Logistics

Our logistics are carefully calculated around the tides, and we cannot be late. Please ensure you strictly follow details for meeting points and times. We will have a briefing in the courtyard at Friday Island on Friday evening at 5pm. (Time subject to final confirmation)

All transfers to Preekstoel will be by boat.
o Transfer boats will depart from Langebaan Yacht Club – time to be confirmed.
Big Bay Events will provide feed on the support boats, however, don’t rely on this. Take gels and a small drink bottle in your swim float.. Detailed discussion at the Friday swim briefing.

Safety

Big Bay Events will be looking after your safety during the swim and the following is an overview of the safety measures:

Swim floats are compulsory.
Swim lights are compulsory. You must place a bright torch inside your swim floats. This is non-negotiable. Anyone with inadequate lighting will be asked to sit on a boat until there is sufficient light.
There will be between 8 to 10 motorized boats guiding the swimmers along the way. These will be spread through the field monitoring and feeding swimmers.
1st Aid will be stationed at Friday Island, which is the central point of the route.
We reserve the right to pick up isolated swimmers and drop you back in a group. If asked to board a boat, please accept that this is non-negotiable.
